I wasn’t always excited about the idea of receiving an education. As years went by, working and earning money became more important to me. After having my daughter I realized, “How can I expect her to finish school, if I wasn’t trying to finish school myself. Since I started attending classes I have noticed many changes in my life. I have developed new hopes and dreams for my daughter and I.
In the past I have attempted to complete high school several times. Each time some type of obstacle stood in my path. I chose to earn an income 7 days a week rather than spend my time at school. I worked as a waitress earning minimum wage. Then I became pregnant with my daughter, and being a mother became my sole focus. Everything I did was for her. Then someone asked me what I was going to do once she started school. I thought about her attending school and wanted to go back to school myself.
I was very nervous and worried that I had forgotten how to do school work. I didn’t think I could do it, but I was determined to try. Sure enough after a couple weeks I noticed my marks were showing I was doing very well in my classes. My self-confidence began to grow and my sense of pride was developing. “I can do this,” became a common thing I would tell myself. I was on a schedule, and my daughter was too. I became happier as a mother because I was now focusing on myself as well as my daughter. There have been tough times but I know now that I can finish high school, as long as I continue on this path of education. My marks now are better than any marks I have EVER received.
I now have goals for the future. Not only am I achieving my mature student diploma, I am also setting goals for college and a future career. I am no longer just hoping to get by in life, but making the best of the opportunities that are made available to me. I believe that not everyone is ready to receive an education at a certain age in their lives. Being an adult and a parent has motivated me to set an example for others that you can achieve any goals that you have. Also, it’s never too late to late to get an education. I am so grateful that I am given a chance to go back to school to make a difference in my daughter’s life.
My journey in life has been enriched with knowledge, success, confidence, and pride. I have new goals and aspirations for the path that lies ahead of me. I can’t wait to continue my education and start a career.

My name is Jade, I’m 28 years old and I’m a single parent of two boys, ages 3 and 6. I’ve always been afraid of failing in the past, so I chose the path that entailed less fear. My view was dim, negative and careless due to my upbringing and how I was taught. I believed I had nothing to aim for, so I gave up on myself. My outlook on all of this changed when I started Adult Ed courses and I’m aiming to obtain my diploma now. I feel very lucky to have another chance to advance my education and personal growth and I’m so appreciative for what this Adult Learning Center has given me.
When I was in high school I struggled through each grade, I was overwhelmed and had little focus so I didn’t believe in myself or that my dreams were attainable. Since I didn’t have goals I was detoured from completing, instead I quit school and looked for work. No one in my immediate family had graduated either, so I was under the impression school wasn’t important enough and not necessary to find a job.
I worked for a few years, became bored as I wasn’t getting anywhere and realized how just making it by wasn’t satisfying. By the time I had my boys I was anxious to provide more for them and driven to go back to school and challenge myself. I told myself I won’t give up because I want more for my boys instead of the mindset I grew up with. I want to be their example to follow, to instill good values like a hard work ethic, so they’ll want to aspire for their dreams.
I knew about adult education but I was intimidated by my past results in a high school setting, so I found another route. The Adult Learning Centre at Taking Charge provides smaller classes, more one on one time and allows students to ease back into academics at their own pace. I found this would benefit me and felt comforted picking up where I left off. I have also learned that with attending my classes through Taking Charge I may be able to receive funding towards college courses. This is a huge privilege and incentive that has helped me stay positive and focused.
Having an Adult Learning Center to attend brings hope to people who are looking to advance their learning and establish a more fulfilling future. The teachers are supportive, encouraging and motivating. They aim to provide stability and they believe in our capabilities. This Adult Learning Center has helped me realize my strengths and I have been able to stay stimulated which is key for me. I feel completely grateful to have gained these relationships through this experience.
Once I have graduated I plan to attend college to become a rehabilitation assistant. My time at the Adult Learning Center has helped me realize my potential as a student and that I can attain a career. Despite any negative aspects, influences and experiences I’ve encountered through my adolescence I have grown to have confidence in my abilities through all the support I am receiving. I am excited to be on this path and will continue striving for more. I can’t wait to be the first person in my family to graduate and show how it’s possible to achieve your dreams no matter how challenging things get.

When I was younger, education was always a top priority for me. As a teenager addicted and losing all hope, school had become bottom priority for me. After being clean and sober attending an Adult Learning Centre has been my saving grace. In this essay I will discuss how attending an Adult Learning Centre has changed my life. These changes include completing a long term goal, building my self-confidence, and setting an example for the most important person in my life.
Ever since I was a little girl there were two days that I looked forward to, one was my wedding and the other was my high school graduation. I had everything planned right down to my grad dress, sadly that day never came. Even though the thought of going back to school scared me, it was the one goal I wanted to achieve more than anything. As I sit here writing this essay I am only one course away from graduating! One of my long term goals is just about completed. I have learned no matter what your goals are always go for them. With a little confidence you never know where they might take you.
Confidence is something that I have never had much of, especially when it came to doing homework and passing tests. I never thought any of this was possible until I came to the Adult Learning Centre. When I first started my courses all that kept running through my head was “I’m going to fail...I'm going to fail”. As my marks started to come back in the seventy’s and eighties I was shocked. It was then my confidence slowly started to climb. With the support of my family, friends, and an amazing teacher I now have the courage to go for my dreams. Confidence comes from inside, and today I am confident to say I can accomplish anything I put my mind to.
Setting a good example for my four year old son is the most important thing to me, as my son is soon to be starting Kindergarten. I did not want him thinking it was okay to quit. Now when I come home from a test or I am doing my homework at the table he is full of compliments. Whether it is a “mommy, I'm so proud of you”, or a simple “good job mom”. He has seen me work hard and has also seen me get frustrated, but most importantly he has never seen me give up. Setting a good example for him has made me a better person; hopefully in turn it has an impact on his life as well. Maybe his graduation will be when he is seventeen instead of twenty-seven.
To conclude this essay, I would like to say thank you to the Adult Learning Centre for all they have done for me. Not only have you helped me complete a long term goal, you have made my confidence level higher and given me a life time opportunity. You have made me a better mother by helping me set a good example for my son. Without this centre being here, I never would have done this. Not only is my son, husband, and family proud of me, but I can honestly say I am proud of myself.
